We are breeding bulls at Bos Park specifically for the harshest cattle environment in the world. The Station country of Central Australia.

This year we will offer our first bulls to market.  Both bulls, which we are transporting from Eastern Queensland placed highly in classes at the Ekka in Brisbane last year. We wanted to prove we could breed stock that are competitive with the best of the breed and then deliver them directly to Alice Springs for promotion and sale every year.

We will offer our bulls exclusively  at the Alice Springs show, so you know you are getting the best we can breed, not the second string bulls you are usually offered.

Rather than chase headlines for an overpriced stud sire, we want to deliver honest hardworking bulls that will breed high performance steers, bullocks and replacement heifers to those that will appreciate it the most and hope that this quality will be rewarded with fair prices at Auction.

I first experienced the cattle of Central Australia several years ago when our family took on a job managing a feedlot in South Australia for Shane Braitling, then owner/ manager of Numery Station, 250km south east of Alice Springs.

To be quite honest we met the first truckload at 3am with some trepidation (shitting bricks). The wild stories and the legend that goes with cattle from ‘the territory’ was enough to give us the willies.

We were amazed. The cattle settled very quickly and although I’ve worked with cattle my whole life and have now fed upwards of 150,000 head of cattle in feedlots across Australia, they were some of the most enjoyable I have ever worked with. The depth of genetics showed out, and the degree of general health, weight recovery and overall carcase quality we achieved was second to none on the market. The character of the stock was also undeniably unique and enjoyable.

In 2007 I was lucky enough to visit the region and take in the conditions and production systems first hand. I am in awe of what can be achieved in this environment by those people who understand the region.

Now I don’t profess any skills in running a station in the Northern Territory, but I’ve seen what the good managers can do do with the right tools.

You generally don’t get first crack at the best stock unless you travel a long way. I also knew that if you were going to take our cattle seriously, my wife and I must set to work breeding the sharpest tools we could.

After asking everybody I could in the region what it was that made the best bull, and having a strong knowledge of what was needed over hooks, we sourced the very best broodstock, culled heavily for every trait outside the right model and have finally come up with two bulls we feel will do the job in the right hands. This will be followed by a team of 8 we are preparing for next year.

We will offer all of our bulls exclusively  at the Alice Springs show, so you know you are getting the best we can breed, not the second string bulls you are usually offered.

2 Bulls will represent  Bos Park stud at the Alice Springs show and sale on the 1st  July this year

Bos Park Corvette 3rd place Brisbane Royal National Association 2010 16 mth bull class

Bos Park Commodore 5th place Brisbane Royal National Association 2010 18 mth bull class

We have used Commodore in our own breeding programme this year as proof of the high regard we hold him in.

Our family prepare and show these cattle. We look forward to meeting new friends and old acquaintances in July. Anyone who would like to share a beer on the afternoon of showday is welcome to join a small (maybe noisy) celebration of our inaugural trip.

Best regards,

Matt, Sally, Grace and Leisl Bekker.
